If you’re reading this, you’re most likely unsatisfied with your current propane provider.

When switching propane providers, you may be looking for a range of different benefits. Servicing, pricing, and customer service may just be a few! Before you start researching who you can switch to, it’s best to be prepared and have an idea of what you’re looking for. Explore your options before deciding on a provider. Some companies offer better benefits than others, so don’t choose the first company you find.

Remember, cheap propane doesn’t always mean good propane! Oftentimes the companies that advertise low prices have additional hidden fees. For example, you may be charged tank rental fees or off-route delivery fees. Typically companies that charge a little more have these fees built into your monthly bill, so you aren’t surprised when you receive it!

What to Know When Switching Propane Providers

  • If you own or lease your tank from your provider.

If you own the tank you may need to prove that you own the tank to switch. If you own the tank, it is much easier to switch providers. If you lease the tank you’ll have to end the rental agreement with your provider, and you may have to pay a termination fee. Switching providers when you lease the tank can be more difficult. Only the company that owns the tank can provide propane. You can ask if your new provider will cover these termination costs!

  • Your delivery method – will-call or automatic & your propane use for the year.

Will-call is when you decide when you need propane. This is not as popular as automatic because you run the risk of running out of gas. Automatic propane delivery is typically the easiest option for customers. Your provider will calculate and schedule propane based on your yearly use. Knowing how much propane you use each year can help you determine how much you’ll need on average.

  • Fees

Ask the provider you’re contacting about switching if there are any additional fees. Are there fees to switch providers? Fees for delivery on top of propane prices? Will your old company charge you for terminating your agreement? Contract termination fees can stack up quickly, so it’s best to have an idea of what you’re looking at beforehand. Not all companies can pay the termination fees, but they can help with some of the cost. There may be additional hidden fees, so it is best to find out as much as you can before switching.

When it comes time to swap, schedule correctly. You’ll want to schedule your propane tank removal and installation on the same day. The new provider should work with you to ensure this happens. This allows you to easily swap providers, and it will eliminate any worries of service disruptions.
